Low on B12?

Rusholme's nearest B12 injection clinic.

Rusholme patients come to Trafford Clinic for vitamin B12 injections — 2.5 miles west via the A5067, typically 10 minutes with free patient parking on Seymour Grove. The clinic operates from Empire Pharmacy (GPhC premises 1123966), led by independent prescriber Haroon Iqbal. Rusholme has a very high South Asian population and vegetarian / vegan diets are common; if your dietary B12 is low and you're getting fatigue or tingling, oral supplements often aren't enough and intramuscular hydroxocobalamin loading (6 IM injections over 2 weeks) followed by 2–3-monthly maintenance is more effective. We'll always confirm with a serum B12 test to a UKAS-accredited lab before starting a loading course.

Vitamin B12 injections for Rusholme residents — the metformin and PPI deficiency angle

Trafford Clinic is the closest pharmacist-led B12 injection service to Rusholme — about 10–15 minutes from Wilmslow Road via Princess Parkway and Chester Road. We operate from Empire Pharmacy, 122 Seymour Grove, Old Trafford (GPhC premises 1123966), led by Independent Prescriber Haroon Mohammad Iqbal MPharm, IP (GPhC reg. 2051093). We administer hydroxocobalamin 1mg intramuscularly — the NHS-standard formulation, listed first-line in the BNF and aligned with NICE CKS.

Why Rusholme sees more B12 deficiency than average

Two specific clinical patterns make B12 deficiency particularly common in our Rusholme patient population:

  1. Long-term metformin use. Type 2 diabetes is highly prevalent in the South Asian community, and many Rusholme patients have been on metformin for 5–15 years. Metformin interferes with calcium-dependent B12 absorption in the terminal ileum, and the longer the duration, the higher the deficiency rate. British Society for Haematology guidelines recommend periodic B12 screening in long-term metformin users.
  2. Long-term PPI use. Omeprazole, lansoprazole and esomeprazole reduce gastric acid, which is required to release B12 from food proteins. Long-term PPI use (often for reflux, gastritis or Helicobacter eradication) is another well-documented cause.

We also see dietary deficiency in long-term unsupplemented vegetarians, post-bariatric malabsorption, and a smaller cohort of pernicious anaemia.

The BNF protocol

New B12 deficiency without neurological involvement: six 1mg hydroxocobalamin injections over 2 weeks, alternate days. With neurological symptoms (peripheral neuropathy, glossitis, ataxia, cognitive change): alternate-day injections until improvement plateaus, then 2-monthly maintenance. Pernicious anaemia: 3-monthly lifelong maintenance. Drug-induced deficiency: typically the deficiency persists for as long as the metformin or PPI continues; some patients can come off PPIs once gastritis settles, others remain on lifelong replacement.

Don't have a recent blood test?

We can run a serum B12 same-day at our Rusholme blood tests service — 24–48-hour results from a UKAS-accredited lab. We screen FBC (for macrocytic anaemia, MCV >100), folate, ferritin, TSH and vitamin D — these often co-exist. For grey-zone serum B12 (200–300 ng/L) we run MMA and homocysteine.

FAQ

Common questions from Rusholme patients about B12 injections.

If your question isn't here, give us a call and we'll talk it through.

It depends. Long-term vegetarians and vegans can develop dietary B12 deficiency because B12 is animal-derived. Oral supplementation handles many cases; injections are appropriate when serum B12 is low, oral hasn't worked, or symptoms are advanced.
Yes — both can reduce B12 absorption over years of use. Long-term metformin (for type 2 diabetes) and PPIs are common causes of low serum B12 we see in Rusholme patients.
