Need a blood test?

Rusholme's nearest private blood test clinic.

Rusholme patients book private blood tests at Trafford Clinic when the NHS pathway is too slow — we operate from Empire Pharmacy (GPhC premises 1123966) on Seymour Grove, about 2.5 miles west via the A5067, with free patient parking. The clinic is led by independent prescriber Haroon Iqbal. We draw to UKAS-accredited labs and most routine panels (thyroid, full blood count, lipids, HbA1c, vitamin D, B12, ferritin, hormone profiles, PSA) come back in 24–48 hours. Rusholme has a very large South Asian population and we see a lot of diabetes-risk screening and pre-Mounjaro baseline panels — our pharmacist-led service walks you through what each marker means before you book a follow-up.

Private blood tests for Rusholme residents — the South Asian risk panel

Trafford Clinic is the closest pharmacist-led private blood test service to Rusholme — about 10–15 minutes from Wilmslow Road via Princess Parkway and Chester Road. We operate from Empire Pharmacy, 122 Seymour Grove, Old Trafford (GPhC premises 1123966), led by Haroon Mohammad Iqbal MPharm, IP (GPhC reg. 2051093). Samples are processed at The Doctors Laboratory (TDL), a UKAS-accredited laboratory used by NHS trusts. Results in 24–48 hours, IP-annotated.

The South Asian metabolic-risk panel

The most-requested workup from our Rusholme patients is the metabolic risk panel: HbA1c (per NICE CKS Diabetes, 42–47 mmol/mol is prediabetic, ≥48 mmol/mol is diagnostic of type 2 diabetes), fasting lipid profile (total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, triglycerides), U&E for renal function, LFTs, vitamin D (commonly low in the UK South Asian population due to combination of dietary patterns, skin pigmentation and reduced UV synthesis), ferritin and FBC. South Asian adults develop type 2 diabetes at an average BMI of around 23–25 kg/m², considerably lower than the broader UK average — part of why NICE CG189 applies a 2.5-point lower BMI threshold for weight-management treatment in this group. For B12 see the metformin/PPI section below.

The metformin and PPI angle

Rusholme has a high prevalence of long-term metformin use — metformin interferes with calcium-dependent B12 absorption in the terminal ileum and is a recognised cause of B12 deficiency in patients on the drug for 5+ years. Long-term PPI use (omeprazole, lansoprazole) for reflux similarly reduces gastric acid and therefore B12 release from food proteins. We screen serum B12 (with active B12 reflex if borderline), folate, MMA and homocysteine per British Society for Haematology guidelines, and if low we can move straight to our Rusholme B12 injections page for loading-dose hydroxocobalamin.

Other common panels

Fertility planning (AMH, FSH, LH, prolactin, TSH, plus partner testosterone) — a particularly common request from younger Rusholme couples. HRT and perimenopause panels. Pre-employment medicals. Baseline panels for our Rusholme weight loss programme. Pre-travel Hep B antibody titre — see our Rusholme travel clinic page.

Diabetes diagnosis thresholds are the same (HbA1c ≥48 mmol/mol). However, screening starts earlier in higher-risk populations — BMI 23+ for South Asian, Chinese, Middle Eastern, Black African and African-Caribbean adults, vs 25+ for white European.
