Vietnam travel health starts with mosquitoes

Most UK travellers to Vietnam spend at least part of the trip in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Hoi An, Da Nang or coastal areas. Health planning is usually different for a two-week hotel-based route than for a month visiting relatives, motorbiking through the Central Highlands, working with animals, trekking around Sa Pa or staying near rice fields during the wetter months. Children are another factor, mainly because they are more likely to touch animals and less likely to report a scratch. Food is a bigger everyday issue than rare tropical infections for many visitors. Mosquitoes still deserve proper attention in cities as well as rural areas, because dengue and Zika are spread by daytime-biting mosquitoes.

City stops, family visits and rural add-ons change the picture

Daytime mosquitoes matter more than the malaria map

Vietnam’s mosquito picture is mixed. Dengue and Zika risk is present, including in urban areas, and the mosquitoes involved often bite during the day. There is no routine tablet that prevents these infections, so repellent, covered skin and screened or air-conditioned rooms matter. If you are pregnant or planning pregnancy, discuss Zika before you book or travel. Malaria is more limited. TravelHealthPro lists low risk in Tay Ninh, Lam Dong, Dak Lak, Gia Lai and Kon Tum, plus some other rural areas. There is no malaria risk in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, the Red River delta, coastal areas north of Nha Trang or Phu Quoc Island. Tablets are usually reserved for unusual higher-risk situations after an individual assessment. Hepatitis A is commonly advised for previously unvaccinated travellers. Typhoid is also often considered, especially where food hygiene may be variable, for longer stays or visits to family. Tetanus should be up to date. Hepatitis B, rabies and Japanese encephalitis are more selective: they become more relevant with longer stays, rural nights, medical work, contact sports, cycling or animal exposure. Japanese encephalitis occurs countrywide, with higher seasonal concern from May to October, particularly in northern rural areas. Trekking around Fansipan adds an altitude discussion too.

Four to six weeks gives you more options

Book four to six weeks before departure if you can. That gives time to check routine UK immunisations, start any multi-dose courses and judge whether Japanese encephalitis or rabies vaccination is worth the time and cost for your route. If you are travelling sooner, still come in; hepatitis A, typhoid and tetanus decisions can often be made close to departure. Bring your itinerary, rough dates, accommodation style and any medical history. Mention pregnancy, immune problems, missing spleen, regular medicines and previous vaccine records. For Vietnam, a consultation usually spends as much time on bite avoidance and food choices as on injections. Use repellent in the daytime as well as evening, cover up around dusk, avoid ice or salads where hygiene is doubtful, and take travel insurance that fits your activities.

Plan the health side locally

Most Vietnam trips do not need a long list of injections, but they do need a sensible read of the route. Trafford Clinic can run through your itinerary, check what you have already had and advise what is worth doing before departure. If you are near Old Trafford or Chorlton, book a travel health appointment online through the page, or call 0161 258 6149 if you would rather speak to someone.

Ask

Questions Our Travellers Ask

How far before travelling to Vietnam should I book travel vaccinations?

Aim for four to six weeks before you leave, especially if your route may involve Japanese encephalitis or rabies vaccination. If your trip is sooner than that, an appointment is still useful because some vaccines and practical advice can be arranged close to departure.

Which vaccinations are commonly advised for Vietnam?

Hepatitis A is commonly recommended for previously unvaccinated travellers, and typhoid is often considered because it spreads through contaminated food and water. You should also be up to date with routine UK vaccinations, including tetanus. Hepatitis B, rabies and Japanese encephalitis are discussed based on your itinerary, length of stay and activities.

Do I need malaria tablets for Vietnam?

Most city and coastal trips do not need malaria tablets. Malaria risk is listed as low in some rural and southern provinces, including Tay Ninh, Lam Dong, Dak Lak, Gia Lai and Kon Tum. Tablets may be considered for higher-risk travellers or more remote rural stays after a proper assessment.

Is dengue a risk in Vietnam?

Yes. Dengue is a recognised risk in Vietnam and the mosquitoes that spread it often bite during the day, including in towns and cities. Use repellent, cover exposed skin where practical and choose screened or air-conditioned accommodation when you can.

Should I consider Japanese encephalitis vaccination for Vietnam?

Japanese encephalitis is not automatically needed for every Vietnam trip. It becomes more relevant for longer stays, repeated travel, rural accommodation, rice-field areas, pig-farming areas or travel during the May to October seasonal peak, especially in the north. Bring your route to the consultation so the risk can be judged properly.
